Walt Disney, the Opera!

Just found this:

http://perezhilton.com/2008-09-30-walt-the-opera

There is going to be a Philip Glass opera about Walt Disney! That was where I found it, but this is where you can read about it!

The Met's Ad Campaign

I'm sure most of you have seen the ads for the Met's new season, but did you know that it is only the second time in the history of the company that they have run such a large scale media campaign and that the other one was trying to lure people back after a labor lockout? I didn't! There is also a little reference to an issue we've heard a lot about in class: marketing classical arts to young people. It's always an issue! There are some nice facts in here, though not tons of opinion. I would love to here what you all have thought about the marketing campaign and where you've seen it.

The only part of the campaign I've seen is the Renee Fleming picture with the one eye. She's pretty in the picture, but there is nothing that tells me how awesome opera is going to be - nothing about the opera at all, in fact, just Renee's eyeball - if I'm the younger generation they're advertising to. Have you seen others that make you more interested in the opera?

This guy loves the new campaign! It's not the most interesting of blog posts, but he does say the Met's new marketing is "rockin'". It's worth reading it to see that in print!

Arts Funding Major Issue for Upcoming Election

As Canada, like the U.S., prepares for a federal election this fall, the issue of arts funding has become an important topic on the campaign trail.

From CTV.ca; Conservative Leader Stephen Harper defended slashing $45 million from the arts budget and dismissed mounting criticism by calling it a “niche” issue that doesn’t resonate with “ordinary” Canadians. In his strongest statements to date over the cuts, Harper said regular Canadians see a “bunch of people, you know, at a rich gala all subsidized by taxpayers claiming their subsidies aren’t high enough, when they know those subsidies have actually gone up.”

This demonstrated particularly poor timing on the Prime Minister’s behalf given his wife is the Chair of the National Arts Centre Gala, which is scheduled for next week. The day following the PM’s revelation, the National Arts Centre released a statement saying that Canada’s
”First Lady” will not be attending this year’s Gala.

Weathering the Storm

With the City of Houston under curfew for the past couple of weeks, arts organizations throughout the city have been forced to cancel performances. Venues are beginning to open again, but producers have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in ticket revenues. How does management recoup from such a devastating blow? Here’s a link to an article from the Houston Chronicle from last week:
