Met Has New Rival in Operas at Movies

well well well...look who's jumping on the bandwagon!  will this up demand for both the met and sf?  or is this too much product?

Nonetheless, for us opera lovers, this is fantastic! more opportunities to see world class opera!

See the world! Quantitatively, that is.

Another great free resource for market research, City-Data.com is a one-stop shop for demographic and economic data, broken down by city and zip code. The website isn't very pretty, but it's hugely informative.

Met Opera adds pay-per-view TV in deal with iN Demand

Oh my gosh!  What isn't the Met(ropolitan Opera) doing?  Not only have they brought opera to movie theaters around the world and made their archives available on Rhapsody, they are now going to be bringing operas to pay-per-view.  Before reading the article, I was a little scared because I thought this meant the end to PBS broadcasts.  However, after you read the article, you will see that it's not.  They still plan to bring operas to PBS.  They'll just do it after they've appeared in the theaters and been available on pay-per-view.  Whew!!!

The Stifling of Russian Culture

Vladimir Putin is well-known for extending his power to virtually every aspect of Russian government, politics and business since he took over for Boris Yeltsin in 2000, but it seems that now he is in the business of culural censorship.  I guess this is one of the postives regarding the lack of federal goverment funding for the arts in America!

What's in a Name? A whole lot of money, that's what.

This is a very interesting article by NY Times writer Charles Isherwood in which he complains (rightly so) about the fact that the naming of theaters, buildings, etc. in America is getting out of hand.  Most non-profits, it seems, will gladly sell the name of their theater or building to the hightest bidding donor.  A little bit scary and a little bit startling.  Read on...
